Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2016 (Part II)

We have recently returned from an awesome weekend in Copenhagen and now is time to summarize what the festival was like and why I think that is one of the best beer festivals that I have ever been to. Firstly, I freaked out when I saw the amount of raters and people taking notes about beers. The smartphones and social media were hopping mad with all the check-ins and ratings. I’ve never seen something like this before but I, have to say that is a positive thing.

The venue

Good location being pretty close to the main railway station of Copenhagen and close to the Warpigs bar and Fermentoren (where the party usually continues after the festival)

Probably not the most beautiful but it was very practical and I didn’t feel, despite some isolated cases, uncomfortable. In fact, it had areas where you had a lot of space (like the Scandinavian bar zone). The unpredictable Danish weather can be a problem if you are not prepared, and at some points, it was really hot inside of the building. Better air conditioning would have been helpful.

The queues

cpc_omnipolloAround 30 minutes of waiting to get the wristband and the glass. Once you get it, and if you are going to all sessions, the queues are much shorter when returning. I have to say that before going to the festival the idea to be waiting for two hours for the next session seemed stupid, but I think that it was a good point to rest and have some food.

I didn’t have to queue and I could taste all the beers that I want, with the exception of beers like the “Dark Lord by 3 Floyds”, some stuff by Hills Farmstead, Bokkereyder or Omnipollo, you had to queue between 10 and 30 minutes.

The glass

In all the beer festivals that I have been in the UK, the glass is a pint glass. Here it was around 8, 10cl and the guys usually filled your glass around 5cl. WHAT? Yes, just 5cl but I must say that this is the perfect size if you really want to taste all the beers that are in your session. Even with this glass’s size, tasting all the beers is quite difficult but at least you can taste all of them and you can repeat if you want :-). Also were several areas with fountains to clean your glass although the water was running out frequently, the staff used to change the corny quickly

The food

The food inside was ok but there weren’t too many varieties. One point to improve the future could be to have food trucks outside of the venue.

Was it worth it?

The price for all the sessions was around 1930 Danish Krones or €260. When I was paying for the ticket I was thinking whether or not it was overpriced. In the UK, a session for the IndyMan or the Independent Leeds costs around 10/12 quid. That would be around 50 quid for two complete days, but now you have to pay for all your beers, so it could turn expensive depending if you drink a lot of or not. In my opinion, this festival is expensive, but looking at all the breweries, the quality of the beers and the audience, I have to say that I will go for sure next year.

See you all at the CBC17 !
